One-stop shop portal for mining sector in Nigeria

The Nigerian mining industry, which remains a core sector yet to reach its full potential, has been beleaguered by the dearth of data on the various solid minerals available in the country. As a result, potential investors have little or no information required to make critical investment decisions.

Appreciating the necessity of an accessible data bank, on matters pertaining to the mining sector, the Federal Government, on Thursday, November 9, 2017 officially unveiled the Integrated Automated and Interactive GIS Web Portal of the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development.

The Integrated Automation and Interactive Solid Minerals Portal (the “Portal”) is the go-to portal for real time information on the mining sector in Nigeria.

The Portal will now serve as the single-entry point for electronic verification of Licences, Permits and Certificates issued by the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development (“MMSD”). Most importantly, the Portal can be used as a platform for electronic processing of mining licenses and mineral title applications, as well as a payment of royalties and fees.

Consequent to the above, intending applicants of any services offered by MMSD and its agencies can submit an online service request and make payment electronically at their convenience.

Other components of the portal include: the Geographical Information System (GIS) Application Portal and Reporting Dashboard; Market Place comprising of Solid Minerals Commodity Price; and Currency Converter.

The Portal is expected to improve efficiency and speed in processing transactions within the MMSD and its agencies and also to enhance transparency and ease of doing business in mineral sector governance. The e-platform is expected to aid the steady growth of the mining sector, as information will now be accessible and readily available, which will in turn contribute to realisation of the Nigerian government’s goal of diversifying the economy’s revenue base, creating jobs and broadening the range of economic opportunities available to Nigerians, as well as foreign direct investors.
